Backup Power and How Long This Lasts

This lesson takes 10 minutes.

LastPsyOp: Read the Full Brief

Objectives

  • Explain why backfeeding is prohibited and what equipment prevents it
  • Put outage duration in proportion using reliability data

Lesson

Backup power first, and one absolute rule. Plugging a generator into a dryer or range outlet with a double-male cord energizes the home's wiring and pushes power back through the service drop onto lines utility crews believe are dead. The electrical code requires listed transfer equipment — a transfer switch or a listed interlock kit — to make this physically impossible.

This is basic electrical physics and the consistent position of every utility safety program. The hazard is the mechanism, not a body count.

Size the generator for what matters — refrigerator, a few lights, phone charging, any medical device — and do the arithmetic from your own appliance nameplates. A refrigerator draws a few hundred watts running and several times that at startup.

Battery stations are silent, emit nothing and can run indoors, which removes the entire carbon monoxide problem; their limit is fixed capacity. Fuel generators have effectively unlimited runtime and a lethal exhaust. For a CPAP or a refrigerator overnight, a battery is usually both better and safer.

Fuel storage quantities at a dwelling are limited by fire code adopted from NFPA 30 with local amendments. Call your fire department and ask; as a side benefit, they will know you exist. Propane does not degrade the way gasoline does.

Now proportion, because preparedness content is usually sold with a countdown clock attached. US customers averaged about 5.5 hours of interruption a year across 2014–2023, of which routine outages are about 2 hours. In 2024 the average rose to about 11 hours, the highest in a decade, with hurricanes accounting for roughly 80% of the hours.

The average is short; the tail is where people die, and the tail is what you prepare for.

The case study worth reading is the joint FERC and NERC inquiry into the February 2021 cold-weather outages. Freezing and fuel supply problems accounted for 75.6% of unplanned generation outages, and — the detail that stays with you — 81% of freeze-related failures occurred at temperatures above the units' own stated design minimums. Equipment was not winterized to its own specification.

Protecting four categories of components could have cut ERCOT's outages by an estimated 67%. Texas's official count recorded 246 storm-related deaths, below independent excess-mortality estimates.

For current risk, NERC's own seasonal reliability assessments name the regions at elevated risk and why — reserve margins, gas pipeline constraints, winter peak demand rising with electrification and data center load. It is written by the reliability organization itself and it is a better source than anything with a countdown clock on it.

Finally, assume the phone does not work. Cell sites have finite backup power and the regulatory history on requiring it is complicated.

A battery or hand-crank NOAA weather radio with SAME programming for your county works when the network does not. Small-denomination cash covers the fact that card networks are electricity too.
