AcademyEvidence and Uncertainty

Observation, Inference, Hypothesis

This lesson takes 9 minutes.

Objectives

  • Label a statement as observation, inference or hypothesis
  • Explain why shared timing is not a mechanism

Lesson

An observation is something measured or recorded. An inference is derived from observations and can be reasonable and still wrong. A hypothesis is a proposed explanation that has not been tested.

Two events on the same day are temporally associated. Causation needs a supported mechanism. A hidden common cause is a hypothesis until evidence selects it. Phainomenon™ exists to keep these layers apart.
